Darryl Smith was placed at Marylands School by his parents when he was seven years old, on the advice of the Department of Education. Darryl’s evidence discussed sexual, physical, spiritual abuse and educational neglect. He also provided insight into the racial abuse suffered by Māori and Pacific children at the school. Darryl spent much of his adult life in and out of prison, and he has remained a tireless advocate for survivors throughout.
