The Abuse in Care Royal Commission of Inquiry is independent from the State and faith-based institutions. We were established to independently investigate what happened to children, young people and vulnerable adults in care between the years 1950-1999.

Our independence is integral to our investigation. It is crucial to survivors feeling safe to share their experiences with us. When you are mistreated - often severely and repeatedly - your trust in these institutions can be damaged, and with good reason. It is because of this that we need to continue to restate our independence.

We are not affiliated with any faith-based or State group set up to respond to this Inquiry, including Te Rōpū Tautoko.

By hearing the voices of survivors, we have an opportunity to expose the truth. We have a once in a life time opportunity to learn from the past and transform how we care for children, young people and vulnerable adults.
